On October 26, at the Omni Hotel Nashville, ACEC Tennessee celebrated its 50th anniversary.

2008 | ACEC Tennessee Celebrates 40 Years
October 10, at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, ACEC Tennessee celebrated its 40th anniversary. Five executive directors were recognized for their dedicated service: Gale Johnson Sowers, Mary D. Shahan, Diane Miller Mulloy, Jay West, and Candy Toler.

2002 | ACEC Tennessee’s New Home
CET changed its name to American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee (ACEC Tennessee). That same year, ACEC Tennessee moved into its new home at the Tennessee Engineering Center, which is home to six engineering groups.

CET began an Engineering Excellence Awards competition, an awards banquet to celebrate excellence in engineering

1990s | Partnering Agreement Executed – ACEC and TVA
CET was instrumental in passing a partnering agreement between The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and ACEC to prohibit unfair competition for all the “valley” states.

Lester Smith, Jr., served as ACEC national president

1975 | Billy Sumner – ACEC President
Billy Sumner, Tennessean active in the national merger of organizations, was appointed to serve as the third national president of ACEC.

At CEC’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans, CEC and AICE merged.

April 19, 1968 | Consulting Engineers of Tennessee
Eight consulting engineers in Tennessee signed the Charter of Incorporation for a new organization, Consulting Engineers of Tennessee (CET). (The eight engineers were Rufus H. Cottrell, Jr., Lorin Allen, Marvin Jacobs, Ben Adams, Tom Rentenbach, S. S. Kenworthy, Marble Hensley, and Robert Evans)

1959 | Consulting Engineers Association of Tennessee
L. A. Schmidt., Jr., Hal T. Spoden, Tom Rentenbach, Ross Bryan, and Lorin Allen led the efforts of bringing a CEC chapter to Tennessee. On September 19, 1959, during an organizational meeting in Chattanooga, that group agreed upon the name Consulting Engineers Association of Tennessee.

Representatives from 10 state associations created a national Consulting Engineers Council (CEC), representing engineering firms rather than individuals.

The organization, which was based on individual memberships, changed its name to the American Institute of Consulting Engineers (AICE).

ACEC traces its roots to the Association of Architectural Engineers, founded in New York City in 1905 to promote the business interests of consulting Engineers.
